4 Strategies for Embracing Obstacles

Most of us are facing some life challenges, and in my last blog I mentioned the catastrophes that I was going through. Everyone has setbacks, disappointments, and tough times. The key to thriving in the face of adversity is how you respond to the obstacles in your path.

Here are four strategies to help you ride through and come out on top.

1. Decide to embrace the obstacle

On Friday morning, when I looked at our business bank account I realized that if we didn’t make sales, we would be in the hole. Thankfully on Saturday, I was coaching our clients (virtually) to help them in their weight management journey, and I knew I’d make some sales of Ideal Protein Food. We’ve had to find a way to coach our clients and provide the food through pick-up or delivery. Similarly, we are also sending out emails each week featuring a product in order to make a sale.

If you’re having a tough time, it can be easy to feel helpless, and even think you are a victim. But it’s up to you to rise to the challenge and decide that you won’t be a victim. ˟Choosing to take control and embrace your challenge is the first step in overcoming it. Look at your obstacle square and ask, “How can I make this work?”

2. Be okay with discomfort

In January, I decided it was time to pursue my Masters in Leadership. I was accepted March 30th, yay! But, you can imagine my discomfort when I realized that now I have to pay for my studies while our household income is reduced.

The proof that you’re embracing your obstacle is acknowledging that it doesn’t feel good. It can feel uncomfortable, heavy, even painful. There are lots of life experiences that hurt at the time, but end up being for your best and highest good.

Am I continuing with my Masters in Leadership? You bet I am! I’ll figure out the money part.

3. Make sure you have a support team

You don’t have to face your obstacles alone. It can make all the difference to have people around you who are supportive, who’ll stick by you and cheer you on when you want to give up.

For me, it’s my husband, his family, my mom and sister. They are my cheering squad and my rock. Their support and enthusiasm elevates my energy to help me get through.

Once you’re part of a team who have each other’s backs, none of you will have to face life’s ups and downs alone. You’ll fight together and celebrate success together.

4. Be grateful for your obstacles

Feeling gratitude for the challenges in life might sound counter-intuitive. But think about it. Accepting the challenge, resolving to meet it head-on, and overcoming it makes you a better, stronger person. Think of how good it feels to deal with a problem and solve it. To face fear and overcome it.

Without obstacles in your life, would you be the same person you are now?

Obstacles are a natural, normal part of living an authentic life.

˟Ensure you are following all public health protocols as you figure out a way to adapt.

You were very easy to deal with. Pleasant manner, tone of voice and easy to speak to.  You kind of have the voice and demeanor that make people "want" to talk with you. Once people know your story, they want to talk to you more, perhaps to grab a bit of your strength and positive attitude in their own lives.  I find you to have a caring way about you. Concerned for others and how you can help them be better at being them.
